KTM UNVEIL THREE NEW MODELS FOR 2020

KTM revealed their latest innovations on the first day of the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. The company unveiled three brand new models – the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R, the KTM 890 DUKE R, and the KTM 390 ADVENTURE

KTM unveiled three brand new models – the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R, the KTM 890 DUKE R, and the KTM 390 ADVENTURE.

The KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R has been ‘re-Beasted’. KTM’s flagship bike has won rave reviews by catering for the preferences and skills of a vast range of motorcyclists and has undergone its most radical re-invention yet for 2020. A completely new chassis, styling and electronics mean the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R has trimmed weight across the board, while a reworked LC8 engine has unleashed even more power.

KTM have increased their potency in the midweight segment with the new KTM 890 DUKE R. Foregoing some of the excellent daily capabilities of its younger brother, the KTM 790 DUKE, the KTM 890 DUKE R is a sportier and edgier naked bike for hard riding. More power and more torque come from the new engine, which has been teamed with racier ergonomics, better brakes and fully adjustable WP APEX suspension. The KTM 890 DUKE R is ideal for the motorcyclist wanting a more extreme experience or searching for bigger thrills and flickability compared to a larger capacity model.

The new KTM 390 ADVENTURE has harnessed the attributes and DNA from the popular and highly rated KTM 790 ADVENTURE, as well as the development information learnt from nearly two decades of Dakar Rally success. An agile and ideal entry model for riders keen to discover the Adventure sensation, this motorcycle offers added versatility for touring and light offroading. Using elements of the KTM 390 DUKE as a base, the KTM 390 ADVENTURE offers proximity to the feeling and performance found at the root of the all-conquering KTM 450 RALLY but with crucial A2 license compatibility and current Euro emissions standards as part of the package.

KTM look to 2020 with great optimism. The surge of almost 10 years of expansion shows no signs of slowing as the company evolves their R&D activities and output for both STREET and OFFROAD markets, fueled by their racing endeavors. They will look to further consolidate their position as the continent’s #1 manufacturer while also exploring other areas of global growth.

KTM LAUNCHES NEW SX-E 5

KTM is proud of its innovative approach to motorcycling, and no more so than the introduction of a new electrically powered junior machine, the KTM SX-E 5.

The result is a highly competitive electric minicycle with a comparable power output to the KTM 50 SX, yet with minimal maintenance and noise. The bike has six power modes allowing a complete beginner to step onto a READY TO RACE machine with ease, whilst the full power mode is exciting and challenging for the fastest junior. With a premium chassis developed by our KTM engineers, the KTM SX-E 5 is fully adjustable in terms of ride height, especially with the additional KTM PowerParts lowering kit, and is aimed at riders aged three to 10 years old. The bike grows with the rider both in ability, and in size – a special feature for this high-quality machine.

This innovative junior bike has an electric motor powered by an ultra-modern lithium-ion battery pack with a robust housing for maximum protection and safety was really at the core of the development of this new model. The power is smooth and controllable offering rideability benefits over other bikes in its class, whilst also providing fantastic agility on the motocross course. Like its combustion counterpart, the KTM SX-E 5 is fitted with WP XACT 35 air fork technology, as well as the WP XACT shock absorber, and it also features high-quality components such as premium disc brakes, cast footpegs, tapered aluminum handlebars and proper race ergonomics. In fact, the KTM SX-E 5 has undergone the same development process as the bigger SX models as raced by the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team. It’s truly an exciting, safe, innovative yet racy machine that will create new riding possibilities for riders and tracks in the future.

“The KTM SX-E 5 is a model we’re really excited to see arrive in dealers. It offers a premium chassis, like those on all of our SX models, but also a lot in terms of rideability thanks to the electric motor, as it’s easy to ride, but at the same time it can be super-fast without making noise. We tested the bike with such a wide range of riders; the complete beginner can ride on a track almost straight away with this bike as it’s so easy to ride, yet a national level rider can have comparable lap times to that of the combustion bike, which is something special. The adjustability of the bike means that a rider can use it for years as they get faster – they can also be more independent in the operation of the bike, and apart from oiling the chain there is really minimal maintenance required. In terms of safety the electronics team worked hard to reach a really high level, and so with top level performance combined with a huge adaptability for the rider, the KTM SX-E 5 is a fantastic new model in the KTM line-up,” said Joachim Sauer, KTM Senior Product Manager Offroad.

The e-mobility sector is becoming an important part of modern travel, and KTM has a dedicated R&D team working on this segment that are developing platforms for KTM’s future plans in e-powered motorcycles. This, combined with years of knowledge in creating premium sportmotorcycles, ensures that KTM is at the forefront of e-technology. KTM has announced it is committed to 4kw-18kw (peak power), low voltage motors and is working to adhere to the most stringent safety standards. The launch of the KTM SX-E 5 an exciting next chapter in KTM’s e-mobility story.

New KTM 690 SMC R & 690 Enduro R released

Naughty has never been so nice. The all-new  KTM 690 SMC R  and  KTM 690 ENDURO are now available, with the toughest decision being which to choose.

The new KTM 690 SMC R is a bike for those craving corner kicks on the road or track with an addictive torque-filled punch at every turn of the throttle. The return of the KTM 690 ENDURO R offers riders a true long-distance enduro machine, always ready to connect the tarmac with its flexibility to perform excitably on and off-road.

Similar in many aspects but completely different in execution, both models take full advantage of an intensive development program. The latest generation of LC4 single-cylinder engine is housed in a lightweight, dynamic frame drip with top specification chassis components and the very latest electronic rider aids to give an exceptional riding experience.

Sharper and more refined, the focus of these upgrades is on the benchmark in their respective class – without diluting excitation and focus with the addition of technology and increased usability.

Both bikes are available with the most powerful single-cylinder production, which is smoother and more sophisticated than ever. Efficient engineering excellence, the latest compact LC4 is a totally modern interpretation of a big single-cylinder engine. Two balancer shafts aligned to a dual-spark cylinder head and ride. The 690cc engine now punches 74 hp and 73.5 Nm of torque; Quickshifter + for further refinement.

Electronic rider aids feature heavily on both bikes, with the addition of ride-mode technology and lean angle-sensitive ABS and traction control systems.

KTM 690 SMC R

All fun and no frown; KTM 690 SMC R. Pure, extreme and high performance – this is a very focused motorcycle that embodies the READY TO RACE. The LC4 drive with advanced electronics in a truly unique package.

The sharpened bodywork is not just for the look; improved ergonomics improve feel and control between rider and machine to get the most out of this Supermoto superhero. All-new, fully-adjustable APEX suspension from the WP experts thus helps to deliver a high-performance and congested commute.

Getting the most from the KTM 690 SMC R's performance in all situations is a suite of driver assistance systems. Two Ride Modes – Street and Sport – cornering ABS, lean angle-sensitive motorcycle traction control and quickshifter + with the familiar Supermoto ABS aiding rear slides with front-end confidence.

KTM 690 ENDURO R

Making the Impossible, the KTM 690 ENDURO R unites tarmac and trails like never before. The latest KTM LC4 single-cylinder has two balancer shafts for reduced vibration, ride by wire to allow changeable ride modes and traction control. More than enough power to pull you clear of the steepest climbs yet efficient and manageable for trails and daily use.

Sharper and slimmer, the new bodywork with a redesigned seat, enhances aesthetics and improved ergonomics. Underneath, a lightweight and agile chassis with fully adjustable WP XPLOR suspension provides a competent package for experienced riders. Better still, the KTM 690 ENDURO R remains safe-footed for street riding, increasing its versatility as a trust-worthy daily ride.

The new electronic systems on the KTM 690 ENDURO R get the most out of this dynamic machine in all situations. Two ride modes – Offroad and Street – produce differential characteristics of the throttle response and motorcycle traction control (MTC), while cornering sensitivity for the ABS and traction control also make its debut on this bike.

Both bikes are available now, with a full range of KTM PowerParts to intensify them even further. For A2 license riders, these machines can be made 35kW compliant with no hardware changes.

NEW ADVENTURES START WITH KTM

KTM 790 ADVENTURE and KTM 790 ADVENTURE R now available

The KTM 790 ADVENTURE and R version are serious offroad motorcycles at their core; developed with the intent of adventure riding but also accessible for riders of all sizes, experience and ability. Powered by a specifically-developed version of the LC8c 799cc parallel twin, these are fully-equipped machines for extreme-minded adventurers who want to charge off and tackle a wide range of terrain, whilst enjoying the comfort of long-distance travel ergonomics, sporty street handling and sophisticated electronics.

These completely new adventure bikes allow riders to push their own limits, ride harder and take the paths least explored, creating exceptional memories that are only possible on powered two-wheelers. Thanks to a 450km fuel range, these machines will encourage explorers to not only ride over the horizon but be driven to carry on past the next one.

Soaking up KTM’s experience in this segment and developed alongside the seemingly unstoppable Dakar-winning KTM 450 RALLY, these bikes set new benchmarks in adventure motorcycling while complementing the existing KTM Travel range.

Both machines share many characteristics and performance, but key differences to components and electronic functions give each bike its intended focus and rider appeal.

790 ADVENTURE £11,099

The KTM 790 ADVENTURE is the most offroad capable travel bike, ready to take on the roughest dirt trails and remains a high-performing street motorcycle. Running on conventional offroad wheel sizes using Avon TrailRider tires and with street focused WP suspension delivering performance on the long straight runs and – more importantly – when the tarmac twists. Aiding conviction for shorter riders is a low seat (height adjustable 830/850 mm) and with the option to lower it as far as 800 mm using an official KTM PowerParts seat and suspension options.

As well as the split rider and passenger seat, the KTM 790 ADVENTURE is set further apart from its R sibling with a longer screen and front fender design for increased wind protection. Larger mirrors also underline its need for more visibility on the street. Visually, it is instantly recognisable by a black frame and available in orange or white bodywork options.

790 ADVENTURE R £11,999

The most travel capable offroad bike. The rally never has to end with the KTM 790 ADVENTURE R; The most performance-focused travel bike in its segment is able to travel longer distances than any other offroad bike.

Immediately distinguished by its white bodywork and orange frame, the R is set apart from its stablemate and all other adventure machines by the high-performance WP suspension it boasts.

Positioned more towards challenging offroad use, the fully adjustable XPLOR 48 mm upside-down fork and PDS shock absorber are the results of an intensive development program that has given the R true enduro-level suspension in a real and capable adventure bike package, that can also be ridden superbly on the street.

The rally ride mode (optional on the KTM 790 ADVENTURE) allows riders to choose their throttle behavior and control the amount of traction control between 9 different levels; perfect for when riding in changing terrains. The anti-wheelie mode is also deactivated in this mode.

These bikes represent an exciting new chapter of the two-wheeled travel segment and are backed up by a comprehensive range of official KTM PowerParts to further intensify the ride. KTM PowerWear options are also available to match the attitude and ambition of these bikes.

PIKES PEAK 2018

Chris Fillmore Races the KTM 790 DUKE to a Record-Breaking Middleweight Victory and Third Overall at Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

The 96th running of the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb took place on Sunday, June 24 and KTM riders Chris Fillmore and Rennie Scaysbrook displayed READY TO RACE performances to capture two overall podium finishes at the Race to the Clouds.

On Sunday morning, Chris Fillmore etched his name into the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb record book once again as he raced the KTM 790 DUKE to a Middleweight course record with a time of 10:04.038. Rivaling the times of Heavyweight front-runners, Fillmore also solidified the incredible feat of third overall as he pushed the limits aboard a middleweight machine.

Finishing just ahead for second overall was Fillmore’s KTM-mounted Heavyweight division teammate, Rennie Scaysbrook, who raced the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R to a near photo finish as he came a mere .692 of a second away from capturing the outright victory with a time of 9:59.794.

Fillmore, who now holds the Pikes Peak course record in both the Heavyweight and Middleweight motorcycle divisions, still remains the fastest motorcycle rider to ever go up the mountain with an impressive 2017 run of 9:49.265 on the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R. This year, Fillmore came into the 96th running of this iconic event with a new set of goals and challenges on the new bike. In true READY TO RACE fashion, Fillmore executed all 156 corners and 12.42 miles of the extreme Pikes Peak course to finish less than five seconds away from the outright victory, giving the middleweight KTM 790 DUKE an impressive debut into the U.S. racing scene.

Chris Fillmore: “We set some goals before coming here to try and win the Middleweight class, break the Middleweight course record, and I really wanted to podium the overall. I got way closer to an overall win than I ever would have expected on a middleweight bike and I’m just happy how everything turned out, it was a good weekend.”

Meanwhile, in the Heavyweight division, Rennie Scaysbrook set his sights on going after Fillmore’s outright motorcycle course record aboard the KTM 1290 SUPER DUKE R. Scaysbrook, who finished runner-up in 2017, matched his previous overall finish on Sunday as he fought hard all the way to the checkers for an extremely close finish with a time of 9:59.794.

The entire KTM team would like to congratulate Rennie on another impressive performance up America's Mountain!

COMMITTED TO IMPROVING MOTORCYCLE SAFETY

KTM becomes the first motorcycle manufacturer to demonstrate Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind Spot Detection systems

Still in the development process, both of these features use sensor-based technology to help detect and prevent a collision from the front or rear. The prototype systems were unveiled on a modified KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S to a select group of media before being live demonstrated at the ÖAMTC driving technique center in Austria.

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) is not designed as an emergency brake system but works when the machine is in cruise control above a designated speed. The system can detect a vehicle in front, ranging from the size of a motorcycle and above, and then locks on to maintain a distance of two seconds by automatic throttle control and – if needed – gentle application of the front brake.

The finalised packaging of the system is still in development along with adding the ability for the rider to customize the operational distance and speed. When fully developed, it is expected that ACC will be able to respond faster than any rider in such a given situation.

The ‘blindspot’ on a bike is usually checked by a long, rearward look which can be dangerous in heavy traffic situations. Blind Spot Detection (BSD) adds another set of eyes in such demanding riding conditions or during a particularly long ride. BSD uses a short distance radar to ACC to alert the rider to the potential of an undetected rear collision – such as when changing lanes – by way of a visual warning on the TFT display as well as with illuminating superbright LEDs integrated within the rearview mirror glass, also boosted by audible signal.

These game-changing features will be part of new electronics packages offered on certain KTM models, beginning from Model Year 2021. This technology will also create provision for other sensor-based systems further in the future, already in development.

Adaptive cruise control demonstration

Development sensors

After personally demonstrating the effectiveness of these systems to the journalists by riding the KTM 1290 SUPER ADVENTURE S without his right arm and leg on the machine’s controls, Gerald Matschl, Vice President for KTM Research & Development, said: “As a company, KTM is committed to improving rider safety and also to reduce accidents. We have a lot more development and many thousands of kilometers to test these systems in the real world before we can implement them on series production bikes, but they are coming in the near future and we are sure they will make a difference.”

KTM PR Manager (Street), Luke Brackenbury said: “When it comes to KTM applying electronic rider aids to its sportmotorcycles, it has always been the same approach to offer features that help riders control their bikes without losing the joy of riding. Improving safety for motorcyclists is part of our responsibility as a manufacturer and KTM has demonstrated this in the past as the first company to offer two-channel ABS as standard on a 125cc machine with the KTM 125 DUKE in 2014 in the same year as introducing the pioneering cornering-ABS function. With ACC and BSD we hope to make motorcycling safer still.”

As a motorcycle technology leader, KTM currently offers a wide range of leading electronic rider aids across most of its 2018 Street range. The goal of such systems is to either help improve rider safety or add to the enjoyment of riding.

Lean angle-sensitive systems can be found on the new KTM 790 DUKE and all of the 1290-powered machines, which includes Motorcycle Stability Control (MSC) with the revolutionary cornering ABS function, along with Motor Slip Regulation (MSR) and multi-stage traction control. On some models, semi-active suspension is offered along with Hill Hold Control (HHC), Automatic Turn Indicator Reset (ATIR), Quickshifter+ and cornering LED headlights.
